Aurora Ares, owner of a bar that caters to paranormals, is content with her life. When children start to go missing in a small Midwest town, it looks like magic is to blame. With the paranormal world in political turmoil, it falls to Aurora to save the children. The problem is, she’s a rogue vampire without the support of a coven. Logan Wayne, who deals with powerful artifacts of magic, might be the best person to help, but his priorities are questionable at best. In order to save the children, Aurora will need the help of her two wolves and a man she can’t trust. To make matters worse, it doesn’t take long before she becomes the next target.

An interesting read. The world is familiar to me from Oxford's other series, but for someone who hasn't read any of her other work, there isn't quite enough information about the world in this story for some of it to make complete sense. The plot moved, but shared the book's biggest defect--it felt somewhat mechanical. For example, Aurora and Logan know nothing about one another, so Oxford tells the reader Aurora's backstory by having her answer a series of Logan's questions. She's supposed to not trust him, yet tells him everything about her childhood, her growing up, her friends, her enemies, etc. It made no sense and felt very unrealistic, especially when she finally gets to ask him questions back, and what she asks is "so favorite hobbies, colors, food groups?"
Come on. This person is someone to whom she's practically spilled her whole life story, to whom she is very vulnerable, someone she's unsure if she can trust as they go into grave danger, but she wastes her chance to get a better idea of who he is, and whether he's a danger to her, by asking him that sort of trivial question? It really didn't work and was thoroughly out of character.
So too, the plot seems more a series of incidents that never quite came together into anything important enough to justify the story. . . yes, the mystery got solved, but it was almost like the only thing that mattered was stopping the bad guys and once that happened, everyone walked away and never looked back or asked why all these things were happening in the first place. Several people in the book talk about how strange the town and what happens there are, but no one investigates. It's just "And by the way. . .isn't that strange?" A big mystery was right there and nobody picked up on it. So I found that odd.
The ending, too, was curiously unsatisfying, I think because that's how the main character felt--somewhat hollow and disappointed that nothing was resolved with Logan, her investigative partner/sexual interest.
